Happy Mondays announced as LMF17 headliner
It’s possibly the happiest day ever in Looe with the announcement that Manchester madcaps the Happy Mondays will be heading down the M6 to Cornwall for this year’s Looe Music Festival.
Excesses in all areas are expected on 1st October, when the legends of the ‘90s dance club scene headline the multi-award winning live music event.
Happy Mondays formed in the ‘80s in Salford, Greater Manchester. The original line-up included Shaun Ryder on lead vocals, his brother Paul Ryder on bass, lead guitarist Mark Day, and Gary Whelan on drums. Mark ‘Bez’ Berry later joined the band as a dancer and percussionist. Rowetta then joined the band to provide backing vocals in the early ‘90s.
In 1990, the album Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches went platinum in the UK selling more than 350,000 copies, putting the band firmly on the map as one of the most influential bands to come out of the UK in the ‘90s. Recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, singles ‘Step On’ and ‘Kinky Afro’ both reached number 5 in the UK singles chart.
Thirty years on, and still active, the band are starting their 24 Hour Party People Greatest Hits Tour this autumn. As the saying goes “If you think you can remember Manchester in the 90’s, you weren’t really there”. So if you missed it the first time around, here’s your chance. Dust off your melons, pull on your Joe Bloggs jeans, and practice your Bez moves because the club-mix promises to be hot, hot, hot at the beach this year.
Step on it and grab your tickets now.
