Let us introduce The Big Cornish Sing

Calling all choirs, shanty singers, bingo callers and rugby-stadium Pavarottis: you are invited to take part in The Big Cornish Sing this September on Looe Beach.

We’ll be hosting the event which will take place on Saturday 30th September, during the annual music festival. The project aims to raise awareness of the Cornish language and encourage more people to sing. Everyone is welcome to get involved and there’s just one song to learn. Free lyric sheets, sheet music and a backing tracks are available online.

Our LMF Event Director, Tanya Brittain explains, “We’re looking forward to delivering this very special event. We want to do as much as we can to promote Cornwall’s unique identity during the festival, particularly as most of our visitors are from outside the region.

“On the day, we hope to have thousands of voices joining in The Big Cornish Sing. We’ll be filming the event and streaming it live. We’re also planning to produce a documentary which will follow a couple of the participating singing groups as they learn the song, and prepare for the big day. We have a host of special guests and some big names already signed-up so you might even find yourself singing alongside some of our headline performers.”

This year, the song is ‘Roev Sos Roev’ (Row Boys Row), which is a modern shanty-style song that captures the working life of Cornish seine-boat fishermen. It’s a song that has already been adopted by many choirs, shanty groups and gig rowing teams and is perfect for the The Big Cornish Sing. You have plenty of time to learn the song, and there are free downloads available to help.

The Big Cornish Sing is co-funded by Cornwall Council and delivered in partnership with the Cornish Language Office. The event is supported by St Austell Brewery and the Falmouth University School of Film and Television.

Even if you’ve only ever sung in the shower The Big Cornish Sing offers the opportunity to get involved with a performance.
