Young Songwriter of the Year 2015

Young Songwriter of the Year 2015

This year, Looe Music Festival will crown our first ever Young Songwriter of the Year. We love having the opportunity to see big bands and performers right here on our doorstep – but we’re also passionate about giving Cornwall a stage to show off some of our amazing homegrown talent. That’s why, this year, we’re giving budding songsmiths from 11 to 16 years old the chance to have their song performed on stage, recorded in a professional studio session, made into 100 CD copies, and released for the world to hear on iTunes and Spotify. All that, along with a massive goody bag of great prizes, handpicked for music fans.

It’s an incredible opportunity for anyone with musical ambitions, so if that’s someone you know – even if they’ve never written a song of their own before – be sure to let them in on it. All potential entrants have until the end of August to get their songs to us, so there’s plenty of time to practice.

Sound good? Get Recording!

To enter, you just need to get your song up on Youtube or Soundcloud, and send us a link. You don’t even need to perform it yourself – it’s a songwriting competition, not a singing contest, so get a friend to sing it if you’re shy.

The Details

The prize package

The winning songwriter will receive:

  • A recording session – spend an afternoon or evening at Cube Recording Studio in Truro. You’ll work with our team of professional session musicians and singers, a sound engineer and a producer who will record a version of your song
  • 100 copies of your song on CD – after mixing and mastering you’ll receive 100 copies of your song on CD. It’ll also be uploaded on to iTunes and Spotify
  • Family tickets to Looe Music Festival – you’ll enjoy a free family ticket to Looe Music Festival 2015 (worth over £200), and the opportunity to hear your song performed live on stage by one of this year’s acts
  • Goody bag – stuffed full of Looe Music Festival and music related goodies

How do I enter?

It’s simple: all you need are two verses, a chorus and a melody line. To enter your song, simply make a video or audio recording of yourself (or someone else) singing it, and upload it to your own Youtube or Soundcloud page. Then email us a link to it (make sure it’s clearly titled, with ‘SONGWRITER’ in the subject line), together with your name, age and contact details to songwriter@looemusic.co.uk. That’s it! Our judges will review all entries and pick a winner.

Tips

Keep your song to under three minutes
Make sure your lyrics are clear

Judging

Judging will be done by a panel of professional musicians and songwriters. A final vote will take place on the 1st September 2015. The winner will be notified by 7th September 2015. Festival tickets will be supplied to the winning songwriter by email, by the 7th September 2015, and we’ll then be in touch to arrange studio dates.

Rules

The deadline for application is midnight, 31st August 2015. To apply, simply make a video or audio recording of yourself (or someone else) singing or performing your song. All participants must be aged 11–16 on 31st August 2015 (at the closing date of entry), and must have been in full-time education at secondary school in Cornwall for the 2014–2015 academic year.

The judges’ decision is final. There are no cash alternative to prizes offered. Free tickets to the festival are for 2015 only, and are not transferable. Any songs with swearing or containing lyrics deemed to be offensive will be disqualified.

Two alternative dates will be offered for recording, and this will take place before 31st December 2015. The CDs will be produced within six weeks of recording (after mixing and mastering).

And don’t worry – you’ll keep 100% of your songwriting copyright, so if it’s a hit you’ll have a fantastic demo to promote your talent.

All entries must be received by midnight, 31st August 2015
